Using Audio Input from sound card

i have Traktor Kontrol S8 sound card/controller installed and it shows up with both an input and an output option in Inputs/Outputs> Audio.
however, i'm not getting any audio signal to go to the audio widget from the Control S8.
when i select mic or line in, it works, but not the S8.
i do get sound out of QLC+ into the S8.
i've never gotten this to work since like 4.3 or something.
now on 4.11.0 macOS Sierra.
